Unique User

A Unique User is a single distinct individual counted only once within a reporting period, no matter how many visits they make.

Detailed explanation

A Unique User measures distinct people rather than raw activity: it counts each individual visitor exactly once for a given reporting period, regardless of how many times that person returns to the site during that window. This makes unique users the metric to reach for when the question is "how many different people did this reach," as opposed to "how much total activity happened."

One unique user can generate many visits — someone who checks a site every day for a week produces one unique user but seven visits, and potentially dozens of page impressions across those visits. Comparing unique users against visits gives a quick read on audience loyalty: a high visits-to-unique-users ratio suggests a smaller group of people returning often, while a ratio close to 1:1 suggests mostly one-time visitors.

In practice, unique user counts depend on the identification method used — cookies, device IDs, or logged-in accounts — and each method has blind spots (a person using two devices may be counted as two unique users under cookie-based tracking, for example), so the number should be read as a strong estimate rather than an exact census of real people.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Unique User?
A single distinct individual, counted only once within a given reporting period no matter how many times they visit.
Can one Unique User generate multiple Visits?
Yes — a person who returns to a site several times within a reporting period is still one unique user but contributes one visit for each of those returns.
Why isn't Unique User count always perfectly accurate?
It depends on the identification method (cookies, device IDs, logins), and the same person using multiple devices or clearing cookies can be counted more than once.
